Hotels

The Peacock Country Inn

Henton, Chinnor, Thame OX39 4AH, UK – 01844 353519

Reasonable value for a large suite although fittings are cheap. Mixed views from room - good and bad. Breakfast good

This is a two for one place. As a result I wasn't expecting too much but I was pleasantly surprised. They have a fenced in beer garden and play area, so generally safe for the kids, but it's right next to a fairly busy fast road so expect lots of road noise if you sit outside. You'll also want to make sure your toddlers don't escape the fenced off area! Can't comment on the beer selection as I was driving :( Desserts and mains both had massive selection, including a large specials board. Was recommended to us on Facebook when we asked for a place for large group where kids could run outside safely. Would definitely give it to others as a recommendation of asked the same in future.

Mercure Thame - Lambert Hotel

London Rd, Aston Rowant, Watlington OX49 5SQ, UK – 01844 351496

I visited the Kite restaurant for Sunday lunch with the family, including 2 young children. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, but the decor and layout was very welcoming and comfortable. The food was very good and portions generous. I had a great roast pork with all the trimmings. The children cost from a children's menu, and their hamburgers were clearly great quality - thick patties, cooked well and very tasty as well. A great experience all round.

The hotel is absolutely beautiful. We stayed in a standard double room and the room was huge and very clean with a spacious bathroom. I found this hotel through groupon and was worth it. Breakfast was included in our stay, the fry up was excellent. Perfect location for a trip to Bicester village. Staff very friendly and extremely polite. Definitely stay again.

Good food and pleasant service. Worth visiting for a meal.

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

Sir Charles Napier

Sprigs Holly, Chinnor OX39 4BX, UK – 01494 483011

Michelin starred gastropub tucked away at the end of a long and winding road - totally cocked up our Christmas meal booking but the a la carte food is excellent if expensive - I wasn't paying so I took advantage of the wine list too. Recommended if the budget isn't yours :-) Rumoured to have space for a helicopter if that's your thing.

Relaxed, given time to chat, get settled , not for people who like regimented time tables this is old school with time taken between courses. Good service excellent chefs, will be back soon.

The Wheatsheaf Pub

Oakley Rd, Chinnor OX39 4HX, UK – 01844 350390

We just moved to the area and I won't lie I was a bit stuck up about the place before I even went into it. It's not all fancy looking like some of the Gastro pubs and I thought it might be a pub with only locals who give you the dirty eye when you walk in. I WAS SO WRONG! This place is great, the food excellent, staff are really friendly and welcoming just like the clientele who all seem to enjoy new people. Really really pleased it's our new local. 10 out of 10 xx

Very friendly place, excellent coffee. Under some reconstruction when I visited. Garden area looks great, outdoor cooking etc. Wheelchair user friendly too.

The Shepherds Crook

The Green, Chinnor OX39 4RR, UK – 01844 355266

Great Sunday lunch with very generous portions! Lovely small beer garden and terrace, with easy access to the Ridgeway. Outdoor seating and highchairs available. Good beer and Gin selection.

You're made to feel as if you're one of the family as soon as you arrive at this pub. The hostess is a bundle of fun and geniality, making everyone welcome and lighting up the room. That, coupled with good food and excellent ale, is enough to cause me to make it new local. Love it!

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

Bed & Breakfast Accommodation plus Guesthouses

Manor Farm Cottage B&B

Henton, Chinnor OX39 4AE, UK – 01844 353301

Delightful English cottage with history and character. Homely and welcoming with all facilities (wifi, tv, ensuite, tea-making) and lovely homecooked breakfast. Set in peaceful village setting with good access to Chiltern Hills and South Oxfordshire. Jean is a wonderful host. Highly recommended.

This is a lovely place to stay with excellent hospitality. Jean and Trevor made us feel very welcome and even though we were there early, was not a problem at all. Bedrooms were very comfortable and clean with a nice bathroom with a great power shower. After getting up and feeling fresh, we were provided with an excellent hot breakfast basically whenever we wanted it. All in all a wonderful stay, and very highly recommended for anyone who wants to switch off from the outside world. Thank you so much Jean and Trevor, and we will be back.

The Courtyard at Wainhill

Thatched Cottage, Wainhill, Chinnor OX39 4AB, UK – 01844 352864

Nice place. Great hosts. Lovely breakfast.

The courtyard at Wainhill is by far the best Bed and breakfast I have had the pleasure to visit. The setting is simply breathtaking and you may find yourself on the front of a postcard as the grounds and the room itself are beautiful. The hosts are ridiculously generous, friendly and accomadating going well beyond the obligations of b&b hosts. They made us feel like guests as oppose to paying customers but at the same time allowing us the space and time to enjoy the grounds and all it has to offer. The room has been built to a very hi spec and no expence has been spared to ensure a comfortable stay from the lovely bathroom and shower to the indulgent super kingsize Hypnos matteress. The breakfast served up by Katrina the host was top class and again her generousity came through on that as well. We had a lovely 3 days there and look flrward to returning next year. This place is perfect if you are visiting Oxford or exploring the Chilterns. Thank you Katrina and the family for a splendid time.

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
