Church Rd, Chinnor OX39 4PG, UK – 01844 352472
This is my village church, dating back to Norman times. Had a good collection of brasses, the cartouches used to design the Rose Window in Westminster Abbey and a great, peaceful atmosphere.
Easy to find on Church Road, Chinnor
1 Church Ln, Chinnor OX39 4PW, UK – 01844 352472
Easy to find, particularly interesting and well kept interior.
Dating from the twelfth century, this church has been subject to various restorations over the centuries. It was old when Prince Rupert burned the village of Chinnor during the English Civil War in 1643, It is one of the largest churches in Oxfordshire, and contains a fine collection of thirteen brasses dating from 1320 to 1514, one of the six oldest Rood Screens in England, and some beautiful old stained glass. At the end of the Lady Chapel, the is a monument to a medi eval knight dating to 1270 which is believed to be one of the Danvers Family. Chinnor Church also contains sixteen paintings by Sir James Thornhill of the Apostles. These are the 'cartoons'; designs painted that were to become the Great Rose Window in the North Trancept of Westminster Abbey. There are many other interesting historical artifacts to be seen in this church which make it well with a visit in a beautiful part of the Chilterns.
